John Coltrane – Program and Handout From Coltrane’s Memorial Service

An original program and handout from John Coltrane’s funeral service, held on July 21, 1967 at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in New York City, four days after the jazz giant’s tragic passing.

The program, featuring the photograph from the A Love Supreme album on the cover, is printed on card stock, and folds open to 8.5″ x 10″. The service featured religious readings, trumpeter and Coltrane friend Cal Massey reading Coltrane’s poem “A Love Supreme” and performances by the Albert Ayler Quartet and the Ornette Coleman Quartet.

The A Love Supreme handout features artwork similar to the interior gatefold from the album of the same name, but omits Coltrane’s liner notes and the album info present on the album cover (see the final photo for reference only, album is not included.) The handout is printed on parchment-like stock, and measures 8 1/2″ x 13″.

We acquired these from a fan who attended the Coltrane memorial service.  He originally glued both pieces into a scrapbook; there is glue residue on the blank back page of the program, and minimal traces of glue residue on the back of the handout.  Both pieces are extremely rare; this is the only example of the  A Love Supreme handout we have seen.
