Acid Test – Grateful Dead – Whatever It Is/SF State Acid Test Poster Handbill

An extremely rare Grateful Dead/ Acid Test handbill for the "Whatever It Is" Festival held at at San Francisco State College September 30-Oct. 2, 1966. This is the ultra scarce handbill that is identical to the larger poster design (a copy of this poster sold in December 2008 on Ebay for $15,000.)(br)This event featured the Acid Test with Ken Kesey, the Merry Pranksters, and the Grateful Dead; The Final Solution, Wildflower, Congress of Wonders, the San Francisco Mime Troupe, The Committee, Mimi Farina, and much more.(br)We acquired this handbill directly from the student event manager and activities director of SF State who worked with Stewart Brand, promoter of the legendary Trips Festival to stage this festival. It was the only copy he had of this super rarity, and is in virtually mint condition. Measuring 7" x 10 3/8", this has two ultra tiny nicks along the edges–one on the top edge above and a bit to the left of the word "researching" and the other along the bottom edge–each measures about 2 millimeters, and of course there is no paper loss. Otherwise this is absolutely perfect.(br)This comes with a signed letter of authenticity from the original owner and student event manager. For those interested, we learned from him that the so called "Small Poster" from this event (featuring the identical image printed on card stock with a white and red border and the words "San Francisco State College" and "Whatever It Is" printed in red ink ) is not a handbill or poster, but actually an advertisement that appeared on the back page of the sole issue of "Context Magazine" printed around the time of the show.(br)We have never seen this handbill for sale, and this is the best example one could ever expect to find. We also have the rare but more common square handbill (featuring Stewart Brand's handwriting and listing all of the acts) available for sale for $500.
