Bob Dylan – 1959 Hibbing High School Yearbook

A 1959 yearbook from Hibbing High School in Hibbing, Minnesota–featuring senior Robert Zimmerman, soon to become world famous as Bob Dylan.  The 180 page yearbook, titled Hematite, features Zimmerman on page seventy-six, in a standard yearbook pose; he lists his ambition as “To join Little Richard” and is mentioned as belonging to the Latin and Social Studies clubs.  While he’s not pictured anywhere else in the yearbook, his high school girlfriend Echo Helstrom is pictured on page 51 and in a group photo for the Social Studies Club.  Dylan said of Helstrom in his memoir Chronicles Volume One “everyone said she looked like Brigitte Bardot, and she did.”  Dylan recounts in Chronicles: “One of the reasons I’d go [to Helstrom’s house]… was that they had old Jimmie Rogers records, old 78’s in the house.” Dylan readily absorbed musical influences, so Helstrom’s record collection seems also to have played a part in Dylan’s musical development.

This copy of Hematite has the added attraction of having no writing in it–every other copy we’ve seen has been signed by numerous members of the class.  In overall excellent condition.  A museum quality Dylan artifact.
