Bob Dylan / Joan Baez – Original 1965 Concert Poster, by Eric Von Schmidt
A rare and highly sought-after concert poster advertising Bob Dylan and Joan Baez’s February-March 1965 US Tour, with Toulouse-Lautrec inspired artwork by Eric Von Schmidt.
This legendary and often reproduced poster is one of the most scarce and collectible concert posters of all time. Von Schmidt, a close friend of Dylan, and a singer-songwriter and artist, carefully balanced the size, height and names of Baez & Dylan, so neither would appear more prominent than the other. Despite Von Schmidt’s care, evidently Dylan objected to the design, and the poster was only used for a few dates, and the rest were discarded.
This tour took place only 4 months before Dylan “went electric” at the 1965 Newport Folk Festival. Its design was unusual for the time, with most posters from the pre-psychedelic era being simple “boxing style” designs, with block type and perhaps a photograph. Like Dylan, this poster was truly ahead of it’s time.
13 1/4″ x 21 1/2″, and in excellent unfaded condition, with just a bit of creasing to the top left edge. (The orange in this poster is prone to fading, with a high percentage of of the surviving copies are at least somewhat faded; however this example is unfaded and bright.)
