An exceedingly rare handbill/postcard advertising two legendary 1963 Carnegie Hall concerts by Peter, Paul and Mary on September 28, and Bob Dylan on October 26.
At this point Dylan, not yet a star, was probably best known as the writer of ‘Blowin’ in the Wind,’ a hit single in mid-1963 for Peter, Paul and Mary. His second album, The Freewheelin’ Bob Dylan had been released just five months earlier.
Dylan’s performance was recorded by CBS Records for a planned live album, tentatively titled In Concert, but shelved in the aftermath of President Kennedy’s assassination. Much of Dylan’s 19-song set remained unreleased until two tracks appeared on The Bootleg Series Vols. 1–3 in 1991, followed by two more on The Bootleg Series Vol. 7. In 2005, six additional songs—including “The Times They Are A-Changin’”—surfaced on Live at Carnegie Hall 1963. The remaining nine tracks, highlighted by “Blowin’ in the Wind” and “Don’t Think Twice, It’s All Right,” finally saw release on the ultra-limited 50th Anniversary Collection 1963 vinyl box.
A wonderful and historic artifact from Dylan’s earliest days as a headlining act.
