Bruce Springsteen – Handwritten Set List From 1986 Bridge School Concert

Bruce Springsteen’s handwritten set list from his acoustic performance at the first annual concert to benefit The Bridge School, at the Shoreline Amphitheater, Mountain View, Ca., October 13, 1986.  The Bridge School benefit concerts are annual non-profit, acoustic shows organized by Neil and Pegi Young.

We acquired this set list from longtime Neil Young associate and archivist Joel Bernstein, who detailed its history in his accompanying letter of authenticity: “At the time, I was working as a guitar technician and occasional musician on a tour of the U.S. with Neil Young and Crazy Horse…We had a concert on the previous night, October 12, in Milwaukee, and a small number of us flew with Neil the morning of the 13th…to set up this concert, a then-rare acoustic only concert with featured Neil Young, Don Henley with Timothy B. Schmidt and J.D. Souther, Tom Petty, Crosby Stills, Nash & Young, and the closer, Bruce Springsteen in a rare near-solo acoustic performance, accompanied by Nils Lofgren and Danny Federici.

Bruce arrived from new Jersey in the late afternoon with, as I recall, eight acoustic guitars, four of them twelve strings, and all desperately needing new strings to be stretched and tuned (by me) in time for Bruce to do a soundcheck before doors.  After that, Bruce asked me if I’d come with him to his dressing room and write out the lyrics and chords for the song that had just been chosen for the encore to be sung at the end of his set, Graham Nash’s “Teach Your Children”.

Bruce wrote out this list in his dressing room, brought it with him onstage, and placed it at his feet during the set.  In the end, he added “Mansion On The Hill” between “Darlington County” and “Fire”, otherwise he held to this sequence.  Between his set and encore, while getting him ready for “Teach”, I made sure to retrieve the set list, as a memento of the day, and especially of Bruce’s short moving, and powerful set”.

Handwritten Bruce Springsteen set lists are extremely rare; virtually every one we’ve seen is a xerox of Springsteen’s original, or a computer printout.  This one, for an important concert, and with impeccable provenance, is truly museum quality.  With Joel Bernstein’s signed letter of authenticity and Recordmecca’s written lifetime guarantee of authenticity.  8 1/2″ x 11″.
