Buddy Guy – 1968 Handwritten Letter & Signed Photograph
A Buddy Guy signed and inscribed photograph and handwritten letter, sent to a fan in March 1968.
At the time Guy sent these, he was a known sideman, but not yet the blues giant he would become. His debut album was issued in 1967; he writes here ‘my first album has just been released.’ Guy was responding to a letter from Los Angeles blues collector and archivist Darryl Stolper, who must have found his address in the phone book–in Guy’s letter, he notes ‘by the way, I’m the right one.’
The letter reads in full (spelling/punctuation preserved):
Dear Darryl, I’m always proud to get mail from any one but some times it mae take a little while before I can write back, but Ill always answer. So just wait a little while (smile) Oh by the way yes Im the right one and Im on Vanguard Records and my first album has just been released so thank you again. Ill be in Los Angles in July / Thinks yours truly, B. Guy.
Guy also signed a beautiful photograph for Stolper Lots of Luck Buddy Guy.
These are by far the earliest Buddy Guy signed items we’ve seen. Letter: 5″ x 7 3/4″. Photograph: 3 1/2″ x 5 1/2″. Both in excellent condition. Stolper’s stamp on the back of the photo.
