Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie – Signed Birdland Jazz Club Menu
A remarkable menu from the legendary Birdland jazz club, signed on the front cover in fountain pen by jazz icons Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie, and broadcaster Bob Garrity, who along with ‘Symphony Sid’ Torin, hosted live broadcasts from a small glass booth in the club.
Parker has signed ‘Best Wishes, Charlie Parker’, Gillespie simply signs his full name, while Garrity ‘Welcome to Birdland, Sincerely, Bob Garrity.’ The signatures, though showing some brushing, remain bold and legible.
Located on Broadway at 52nd Street in New York City, Birdland, named after the great Charlie Parker, was the epicenter of New York City’s jazz scene from its opening in 1949 until its closure in 1965. During its storied run, it hosted virtually every major jazz artist of the era, including John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Billie Holiday, Thelonious Monk, Lester Young, Stan Getz, Art Blakey, Coleman Hawkins, Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Bud Powell, Charles Mingus, and many more. Its legacy is preserved in iconic live recordings such as One Night in Birdland by Charlie Parker (1950), A Night at Birdland by Art Blakey (1954), Basie at Birdland by Count Basie (1960), and Live at Birdland by the John Coltrane Quartet (1964).
This signed menu is a tangible piece of jazz history, celebrating the legends who defined an era and the venue that showcased their genius.
