Charlie Parker, Thelonious Monk, Bud Powell – Original “Birdland” NYC Jazz Club Menu

A scarce menu from the legendary New York Jazz Club Birdland.  Birdland opened December 15, 1949, at the corner of Broadway and 52nd Street in Manhattan.  The original owners named it Birdland to capitalize on the great popularity of sometime headliner Charlie “Yardbird” Parker.  Birdland billed itself at “at the Jazz Corner of the World” and it was no mere hype–many jazz greats including Miles Davis, Thelonious Monk, Dizzy Gillespie, Stan Getz, Lester Young, Bud Powell, Art Blakey and John Coltrane played the club.  George Shearing’s standard “Lullaby of Birdland” was named in honor of the club.  And during the 50’s it was a frequent place for celebrities to be seen, with regulars including Frank Sinatra and Ava Gardner, Gary Cooper, Marilyn Monroe, Sugar Ray Robinson, Marlene Dietrich, Joe Louis and Judy Garland.

The four page menu measures 8 1/2″ x 11″ and is in overall excellent condition, save for three holes punched on the left side.  Only the second Birdland menu we’ve ever offered.
