David Bowie – Hunky Dory Original Album Cover Art
Here is the most unique and desirable David Bowie item we've had the pleasure to offer– the actual hand-retouched photograph used to make the album cover of Bowie's classic album 'Hunky Dory.' It's a sepia photograph, hand tinted by Bowie's childhood friend (and sometime art director) George Underwood.(br)It measures 9" x 8 1/2" and is in excellent condition, though the blue tinting has faded completely and the yellow tinting has to some degree. Our research shows this to be quite common with hand-retouched photographs exposed to natural light.(br)Where Bowie's hair meets his forehead (above and to the right of his right eye), you can see some dabs of white paint that were applied to the hair to even out his hairline. There is also a darkish line across the bottom that has been retouched out on the album cover. In person, from an angle you can see exactly where the hand retouching stops and starts on the photo (you can get a bit of an idea of this on the second photo looking at Bowie's hair below his chin on the left, where the hair curl is visibly highlighted by the retouching.)(br)This artwork was cropped for use on the album cover, and has more of the image than appears on the cover on the left, right and bottom edges. There are some glue stains on the reverse as it was previously adhered to art board, but these are invisible from the front.(br)We are selling this for Michael Olsen, former head of the Official David Bowie Fan Club, from 1975-1977. Amazingly, in his first week on the job he was given a pile of Bowie materials deemed no longer of use, and instructed to dispose of them. These included this original album cover artwork, which he, as a collector, kept. He has had it in his possession since 1975, and it comes with his signed letter of authenticity.
