David Bowie – UK 1st Pressing “Hunky Dory” LP w/Laminated Cover (Ex-Collection of Bill Wyman, of the Rolling Stones)

A rare 1971 UK first pressing of David Bowie’s album Hunky Dory on RCA Records, with the earliest disc and laminated album cover, from the personal record collection of Bill Wyman of the Rolling Stones.

Recordmecca’s Jeff Gold acquired this directly from Bill Wyman while doing consulting for him, and at his request Wyman hand signed the included letter of authenticity, which reads:

To Whom It May Concern:  This letter is to authenticate a first pressing with laminated cover of the album Hunky Dory by David Bowie from my personal record collection.  I acquired this record near the time of the album’s release, and it has been in my possession since then.  (signed) Bill Wyman.

The laminated-front album cover is in Near Mint- condition, with some very minor lamination creasing and a very small crease to the bottom left corner.  The disc is in Ex condition and sounds great, with a few light ticks at the end of “Andy Warhol”.

Hunky Dory was Bowie’s first album for RCA, and only the very first copies had a laminated front cover and spine, lacked the text “A Gem Production” on the top right corner of the back cover, credited the publishing to “Chrysalis Music Ltd/Titanic Music”, and had 3T stampers and “Bobil” and “Rasputin” etched into either side of the disc–as with this example.  (The lyric insert is not present, but easily obtained from a later copy).

With Bill Wyman’s signed letter, and Recordmecca’s written lifetime guarantee of authenticity.
