Dizzy Gillespie and Cal Tjader – 1957 Boxing-Style Concert Poster

An extremely rare oversized 24" x 17" boxing-style cardboard concert poster for Bebop and modern jazz legend Dizzy Gillespie and West Coast jazz star Cal Tjader advertising two 1957 concerts at the San Jose Civic Auditorium and the Berkeley Community Theatre. This poster is in fine condition, with some light but even toning, and pinholes in the top corners and the middle. The poster mentions Gillespie's famed US State Department tours (in 1956) of the Far East and South America. This was a very early State Department effort to promote the USA, and got a lot of positive attention for Dizzy and the United States. This poster was originally owned by Ralph J. Gleason (1917-1975;) one of the most influential jazz music critics of all time. A central figure in the San Francisco music scene, he helped organize the Monterey Jazz Festival and co-founded Rolling Stone magazine. Gleason was a longtime contributor and editor to Downbeat and Metronome magazines, and wrote liner notes for many Jazz icons including Miles Davis and Duke Ellington. We purchased this and the rest of Gleason's poster collection directly from his family. About as nice a jazz poster as you could ever hope to find, with superb provenance.
