Fats Waller – Signed 1936 Donation Receipt
A receipt signed by legendary Jazz piano player Thomas “Fats” Waller, for a $25 donation to the Washington DC “Boys’ Club of Metropolitan Police”. According to Wikipedia, Waller’s innovations in the Harlem stride [piano] style laid the groundwork for modern jazz piano. His best-known compositions, “Ain’t Misbehavin” and “Honeysuckle Rose” were inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1984 and 1999.
Waller was also generous–according to an online inflation calculator, $25 in 1936 is the equivalent of $446. today. The receipt, measuring 6 1/2″ x 3 3/4″ is in excellent condition, with a long flattened vertical fold down the middle. Waller signs “Thomas Fats Waller” and the donation was ‘taken’ by ‘R.W. Valentine”.
