Fleetwood Mac – Original Album Cover Photograph/Artwork for “Heroes Are Hard To Find” by Herbie Worthington III
The original photograph used on the cover of Fleetwood Mac’s 1974 album Heroes Are Hard To Find, taken by the late Herbie Worthington III. This large mounted print came from Worthington’s estate, and is almost certainly the actual print used by the Warner Bros. Records art department to create the album cover.
Measuring 15 ½” x 19 ¼”, this archival hand-made print is dry mounted onto art board and stamped on the back “This Photographic Print Created and Produced By Worthington” and stamped with the date “Jun. 15 1974.” According to Wikipedia, Heroes Are Hard To Find was recorded during July 1974, and released on September 15, 1974—showing this print dates from long before the album’s release.
Recordmecca’s Jeff Gold is a former executive vice president/general manager of Warner Bros., where he art directed many album covers, and notes this is exactly the kind of prints a photographer would submit for use on an album. If a photographer requested, the original “shooting art” would be returned to them.
The print is in overall fine condition, with some very light surface and corner wear, and a few tiny chips to the surface (the largest the size of a pin head, and easily retouched.) It will frame beautifully.
In Mick Fleetwood’s book Play On: Now, Then and Fleetwood Mac, he speaks fondly of “the great photographer Herbie Worthington” a bright soul, always smiling… an artist as iconic as the images he created. He could make anyone comfortable, because he wore his heart on his sleeve and so from the start, he was able to capture fleeting moments in our world. He was the one we choose to shoot the cover of Heroes Are Hard to Find, an image that features me modeling gorgeously a pair of lace underpants that belonged to Sandra (a friend). I’ve got my chest puffed-up, which means my ribs are showing and I’m holding my three-year-old daughter Amelia’s hands as she stands on my shoes. He took that photo of us in a three-way mirror, so the final image is three sides, back-to-back. Herbie was to remain a close friend of the band, in fact he was the one who took the iconic photos that became the covers of Fleetwood Mac and Rumours.
A wonderful and unique Fleetwood Mac collectible. With a copy of the released Heroes Are Hard To Find album and Recordmecca’s lifetime guarantee of authenticity.
