Frank Zappa & Mothers of Invention – 1966 ‘Freak Out Hot Spots’ Map

An extremely rare 1966 ‘Freak Out Hot Spots’ map designed by Frank Zappa, and advertised for sale in the earliest pressings of The Mothers of Invention’s masterpiece double album, Freak Out!

A small advertisement inside the Freak Out! album cover (see image) proclaims PLANNING ON VISITING L.A. THIS SUMMER? Send for your copy of the special map we have prepared for you: ‘FREAK OUT HOT-SPOTS” shows how to get to Canters, Ben Frank’s, Fred C. Dobbs, The Trip, The Whisky A-Go-Go, The Brave New World, It’s Boss, Bito Lido’s…Also shows where the heat has been busting frequently, with tips on safety in police-terror situations.  Only $1.00…Hurry! This map has no commercial potential!’

This offer appeared only in the earliest copies of Freak Out, and in 45 years of looking, we have seen fewer than 10 examples, all of which came from industry collections.  We know of none that came from people who mailed in.

Great Zappa artwork on both sides, depicting the essential stops for a tour of 1966 Freaky L.A, and art that later surfaced on the cover of Absolutely Free.

Near Mint, with a bit of excess ink smudging to the top of the black and white side, and a tiny edge chip and tiny edge tear. Machine folded as it originally came.

28 1/2″ x 23.”
