Grateful Dead – Jon Hendricks – Fire In The City 1967 Single
A scarce promo copy of Jon Hendricks 1967 single “Fire In The City/Sons and Daughters,” on which he is backed by the Grateful Dead. Recorded in March 1967 for the soundtrack to the documentary film “Fire In The City.” Hendricks, the noted vocalist from Jazz vocal trio Lambert, Hendricks, and Ross personally confirmed to Recordmecca’s Jeff Gold that he is indeed backed by the Dead on this record, recorded only two months after the sessions for their first album. In NM/EX condition, it has probably been played only once or twice, but has light surface noise and an inaudible superficial mark on one side. This single was originally owned by Ralph J. Gleason (1917-1975;) one of the most influential music critics of all time. A central figure in the San Francisco rock scene, he helped organize the Monterey Pop Festival and co-founded Rolling Stone magazine–and was an early and vocal supporter of the Grateful Dead, who he wrote about extensively. We purchased this and the much of Gleason’s record collection directly from his family.
