Grateful Dead – Near Mint “Skeleton & Roses” FD-26 Second Printing Poster (RP-2)
A rare concert poster advertising a series of September, 1966 shows by the Grateful Dead and Oxford Circle at the Avalon Ballroom in San Francisco. Popularly know as “Skeleton & Roses”, it features artwork by Stanley Mouse and Alton Kelley ( FD-26 (RP-2) in the Family Dog concert poster series.) This Near Mint example is beautifully signed by Stanley Mouse with his “mouse” logo, in the bottom left corner.
This is a circa 1966 second printing, distinguised by the “26(2)” and “Family Dog Productions 1966 1725 Washington Street San Francisco (415)673-3050” in the lower left corner. “The Bindweed Press, San Francisco” appears in the border above the right side of the ticket outlets strip. The central image is a 1913 woodcut by Edmund Sullivan, illustrating the 26th quatrain of The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam. This poster was part of the Smithsonian’s 20th Century American Posters exhibit and accompanying book.
This extremely clean and unfaded example has had very minimal and expert restoration to fill one pinhole in each corner. There are four tape pulls on the back, invisible on the front. A beautiful example of arguably the most sought after poster in the Family Dog series, signed by one of the master poster artists of the era.
