Grateful Dead – Original LIVE DEAD Poster Artwork

The original artwork for a 1969 Warner Bros. Records promo poster for the Grateful Dead’s double album “Live Dead.” “Live Dead” was the Dead’s first official live album, and a breakthrough success for the band—-at the time of the album’s release, noted rock critic Robert Christgau wrote the second side of the album contained “the finest rock improvisation ever recorded.” This is the “mechanical” for a promo poster–the artwork sent to the printer, used to make the film and print the poster. It features hand cut type, the album artwork cropped differently and with a black (instead of red) Warner Bros. logo, and a hand applied black border. The artwork measures 12 1/2″ square (this would have been enlarged while making the film to print a larger poster), laid down on a 15″ x 20″ piece of art board. The album catalog number is written on the board, as is the notation 24 1/4″ (indicating the size of the finished poster.) This arwork was discarded by Warner Bros. in the mid 1970’s during an art department clear out, and saved by the friend of a former employee. It is in excellent condition, suitable for framing, and as everything we offer, it is guaranteed authentic without time limit. An unusual and desirable Dead collectible.
