Janis Joplin – 1966 Big Brother / Hell’s Angels Concert Poster / Sokol Hall, San Francisco

A rare poster advertising a November 1966 show by Big Brother and the Holding Company (with Janis Joplin) with Ken Kesey’s Merry Pranksters, presented by the Hells Angels at San Francisco’s Sokol Hall.  This poster is illustrated as plate 2.247 in the definitive poster reference guide The Art of Rock.
Big Brother were only paid $250. for this show, but the ticket price was only $1.00–and it was probably was safer, with the  Angels as promoters, not to drive too hard a bargain.  The artwork is by Gut, a Hell’s Angel and friend of the Grateful Dead.
The poster is in Very Good condition, with some even discoloration/staining to the front, apparently from hanging near a gas heater in the 1960s.  There is a missing bit of paper to the top left corner, and some minor conservation has been done to the back to close a few small edge tears.
In 2017, a clean copy of this poster sold at auction for $8637.
