Janis Joplin and Big Brother – Charlatans – Etc – Grope For Peace 1966 Concert Poster

A rare poster advertising ‘Grope For Peace,’ a benefit ‘to help a tribal member of the Mystic Research Foundation/Northern California Psychedelic Cattlemen’s Association, Ltd.” (aka the original Family Dog collective members.) This December 26, 1966 show featured Big Brother & The Holding Company (with new lead singer Janis Joplin,) The Charlatans, Congress of Wonders, Final Solution and Lynne Hughes. The poster features artwork by the great Stanley Mouse (listed in the Art of Rock as AOR 2.130,) and measures 11 1/2′ x 17’. In near mint minus condition, it has three pinholes in each of the top corners, one each in the bottom corners and a set of small staple holes in the bottom center. Overall this is extremely clean and will frame mint. This poster comes the collection of the late Ralph J. Gleason (1917-1975;) one of the most influential jazz and pop music critics of all time. He was a central figure in the San Francisco rock scene, helped organize the Monterey Pop Festival, and co-founded Rolling Stone magazine. Bill Graham himself credited Gleason with suggesting the Fillmore Auditorium to him as a site for concerts, while the Family Dog met with Gleason at his home to discuss their idea to stage dance concerts, prior to their first show at the Longshoreman’s Hall. This is a rare opportunity to obtain a poster from the personal collection of one of the key figures of the San Francisco Scene. On request, we will gladly provide a certificate of authenticity stating that this poster came from the Ralph J. Gleason Collection.
