Janis Joplin / Stanley Mouse / Big Brother – Circa 1966 Mouse-Signed Receipt for Poster Design (w/very early full signature) + 1966 Matrix Handbill

A circa 1966 Mouse Studios receipt reading “Received 30.00 advance on account for poster design,” signed by legendary poster artist Stanley Mouse, with his very rare full signature and mouse drawing (the only example we’ve seen of Mouse signing his full name, legibly.) With a Mouse-designed handbill advertising a run of November 1966 Big Brother and the Holding Company shows at San Francisco’s Matrix.

This receipt came from the estate of collection of early Big Brother manager, Julius Karpen (1935-2021).  Mouse designed a few early handbills for Big Brother; it’s unknown exactly which this receipt was for, but we have paired it with this classic from the Matrix, picturing the band including Janis Joplin (the handbill is not from Karpen’s collection.)

Receipt in very good condition with minor handling and two very small areas with minimal foxing.  8 1/2″ x 6 3/4″.  Handbill in excellent condition with two pinholes.  8 1/2″ x 11″.
