Jefferson Airplane – Bill Graham – Jefferson Airplane Presents Joke Poster

A poster produced by The Jefferson Airplane picturing band manager/San Francisco promoter Bill Graham, and reading across the top “Jefferson Airplane Presents,” circa 1967. By this time, Graham was famous for plastering the Bay Area each week with psychedelic posters, promoting his weekly shows at the Fillmore, each reading across the top “Bill Graham Presents.” This poster was the band’s humorous response to Graham’s ubiquitous posters, and we think it hits the nail on the head ! We loaned this poster to San Francisco’s Museum of Performance and Design, where it was exhibited as part of their San Francisco Rock show “Something Happening Here.” The poster measures 17 1/2″ x 22 1/2″, and is in VG+ condition, with some general handling, a 1/2″ edge tear at the bottom, and a small chip to the right edge, neither of which affect the image. This poster comes the collection of the late Ralph J. Gleason (1917-1975;) one of the most influential jazz and pop music critics of all time. He was a central figure in the San Francisco rock scene, helped organize the Monterey Pop Festival, and co-founded Rolling Stone magazine. Bill Graham himself credited Gleason with suggesting the Fillmore Auditorium to him as a site for concerts, while the Family Dog met with Gleason at his home to discuss their idea to stage dance concerts, prior to their first show at the Longshoreman’s Hall. Gleason obtained these posters at the Fillmore after shows, and took them home, storing them carefully in his archive. This poster has never been exposed to light, and looks brand new (there is a tiny edge ding in the top left corner, but it’s barely noticeable.) This is a rare opportunity to obtain a poster from the personal collection of one of the key figures of the San Francisco Scene. On request, we will gladly provide a certificate of authenticity stating that this poster came from the Ralph J. Gleason Collection.
