Jefferson Airplane, Buffalo Springfield – 1967 Grace Slick Signed Handbill / AOR 2.240

A rare handbill for a concert by Jefferson Airplane and Buffalo Springfield at the University of San Francisco Memorial Gymnasium on April 7, 1967, signed on the back by Airplane lead singer Grace Slick.

This was a peak period for the Airplane; only two months before this show they’d released their second album, Surrealistic Pillow, and its debut single, ‘Somebody to Love.”  Just one week after this show ‘Somebody to Love’ entered the Billboard singles chart, eventually hitting at #5 in mid-June.  In 2003, Surrealistic Pillow was ranked number 146 on Rolling Stone magazine’s list of the ‘500 Greatest Albums of All Time.’

As noted in the accompanying letter of authenticity from the original owner, ‘I was in the U.S. Army, stationed in Monterey, California…A friend and I rode to San Francisco to attend the April 7, 1967 concert…After the concert was over, I waited as the auditorium cleared out.  The band and crew were still on stage…I saw Grace, walked up to her and asked for an autograph.  The only thing I had to sign was the handbill for the concert.  She signed it on the back.  I folded it up, put it in my pocket, and headed home.  I have had the handbill ever since.’

This handbill is reproduced as plate 2.240 in the definitive reference book The Art of Rock.

5 1/2″ x 10,” printed on thick textured card stock. In excellent condition, with  single, long flattened vertical and horizontal creases from having been folded in quarters.

With Recordmecca’s written lifetime guarantee of authenticity.
