Jefferson Airplane – Grace Slick – Grace Slick’s Monterey Pop Festival Worn Dress

Offered here is one of the most truly extraordinary music collectibles we’ve ever had the pleasure to offer–the original dress Grace Slick wore while performing with the Jefferson Airplane at the historic Monterey Pop Festival in June, 1967.  The Monterey Pop Festival was first major rock music festival, and along with the 1969 Woodstock Festival, it is considered one of the most important live music events ever. “Monterey Pop” (and the film of the same name, made at the festival) introduced the Jefferson Airplane, The Who, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, the Grateful Dead and many other artists to mainstream audiences, and is viewed today as one of the major counterculture event of the 1960’s.  The Jefferson Airplane was one of the breakout acts at Monterey, and their dynamic front-woman and singer, Grace Slick, is a big part of the reason why. Offered here is the actual caftan (a Moroccan dress) that Grace wore while performing with the Airplane that historic day at Monterey. She can be seen wearing this in the Monterey Pop film, as well as in the recently released extended DVD box set, which included the Airplane’s complete performance at Monterey.  Shown here are some still photos from the Airplane’s set that clearly show Grace wearing this caftan, as well as a Japanese EP with artwork featuring live shots from Monterey.  She is also pictured wearing this caftan while performing in San Francisco in the program for the Airplane’s 1968 US Tour.  Recordmecca’s Jeff Gold obtained this directly from Grace Slick and her daughter, China Kantner (who’s father is the Airplane/Starship’s Paul Kantner.) Grace has written a note authenticating this on an index card (China tells us Grace writes most everything on note cards these days.) The caftan is in overall very good condition, with a very few very small tears, and a bit of fading.  While dealers often refer to collectibles as “museum quality” this truly is; it has been exhibited as a part of the Museum of Monterey’s Monterey Pop exhibition Music, Love & Flowers and the Kogart Museum in Budapest’s exhibit From San Francisco to Woodstock.  We also have less expensive outfits worn by Grace Slick during the 1960’s, but this is truly a trophy piece of music memorabilia, with impeccable provenance. As with everything we offer, this is guaranteed authentic with no time limit.
