Jefferson Airplane / Sopwith Camel – 1967 Psychedelic Levi’s Radio Spots 10″ LP (9 Ads by 3 Groups/Art by Mouse)

An impossibly rare 10″ promotional ‘Salesman’s Record’ issued in Fall 1967 by Levi Strauss & Co. with nine psychedelic radio spots advertising Levi’s by the Jefferson Airplane, Sopwith Camel and West Coast Natural Gas Co.  With the ultra rare picture sleeve with artwork by Stanley Mouse.

Wanting to capitalize on the Summer of Love, Levi Strauss hired San Francisco’s hottest band, the Jefferson Airplane, along with Sopwith Camel and West Coast Natural Gas to create unique and very psychedelic 45 and 60 second advertising spots to promote Levi’s jeans.  The spots were pressed on a few different configurations of discs, but this is the most desirable–a 10″ disc with nine different spots, and a custom picture sleeve designed by San Francisco poster legend Stanley Mouse.

The Airplane created four different spots: ‘Twig City’, ‘Balloons Stretch’, ‘East Indian’ and ‘Duck’.  The four Sopwith Camel tracks are titled ‘Levi Strauss Waltz’, ‘Worksong’, ‘Good Morning, Old Jeans’ and ‘Stretch’; while West Coast Natural Gas Co. contributed one track, ‘Speed Up Stretch’.

The disc is in VG+ condition, with some light scuffing, but nothing serious.  The cover is in EX condition with light handling.  Also included is a copy of the Levi Strauss & Co. newsletter ‘Saddleman’s Review’ promoting the innovative advertising campaign.  We can locate only one other example of this record, which sold in 2011.
