A beautiful first printing of BG 105, the legendary "Flying Eyeball" poster by Rick Griffin, made to promote a series of February, 1968 concerts at the Fillmore and Winterland by the Jimi Hendrix Experience, John Mayall & The Bluesbreakers, and Albert King. This is probably the most sought after of all Filllmore Posters, because of the classic image, the collectibility of Rick Griffin, and of course the fact that it's promoting a Jimi Hendrix concert. This is the first printing, with the letters "TIC" in Tickets obscuring the number 105 in the lower left corner. It is printed on matte (uncoated) stock, while the 2nd printing was on coated, glossy stock. This poster was originally owned by Ralph J. Gleason (1917-1975;) one of the most influential music critics of all time. A central figure in the San Francisco rock scene, he helped organize the Monterey Pop Festival and co-founded Rolling Stone magazine. Bill Graham himself credited Gleason with suggesting the Fillmore Auditorium to him as a site for concerts, while the Family Dog met with Gleason at his home to discuss their idea to stage dance concerts, prior to their first show at the Longshoreman's Hall. When the organizers of the Monterey Pop Festival had trouble recruiting the San Francisco bands, they turned to Gleason and Bill Graham, who were able to convince the major acts to come on board. We purchased this and the rest of Gleason's poster collection directly from his family. The poster has had some minor restoration, primarily filling in pinholes in the corners. The restoration was done by the great Chris Fennell of Chameleon Restoration, who we feel is the best paper restorer in the United States. It looks absolutely beautiful; we grade it NM-. It measures approximately 13 7/8" x 21 3/8". A beautiful a example of a legendary poster, with great provenance too.
