Jimi Hendrix – 2 Alternate Mixes ‘Nine To The Universe’ Master Tapes, From Producer’s Archive

Two Jimi Hendrix alternate master tapes for Side 1 and Side 2 of Jimi Hendrix’s 1980 album Nine to the Universe. These feature different mixes from the released album, some alternate song titles, and have Side 1 and Side 2 reversed. Formerly owned by the album’s co-producer Alan Douglas, the two 7″ reel-to-reel tapes were made at Masterdisk Studios in New York, and dated 6-13-78 (nearly two years before the album was released, in March, 1980.)

The performances here are the same as the released versions, but are significantly different mixes from the released album. Side A and Side B on the tapes were reversed for the released version, and some of the song titles on the released album differ—“Hendrix/McCarty Jam” became “Jimi/Jimmy Jam”, “Hendrix/Young Jam” became “Young/Hendrix”, “Hendrix/Lee Space Blues” became “Easy Blues”.

We acquired these tapes from Douglas’ ex-wife and Jimi Hendrix’s close friend, Stella Benabou Douglas.  She appears in the 1973 documentary A Film About Jimi Hendrix, and with her design partner Colette Mimram, created many outfits for Jimi, including the white fringed jacket he wore at the Woodstock festival.

The tapes plays perfectly and a professional digital transfer is included.  A rare opportunity to own two Jimi Hendrix master tapes with exceptional provenance. See our other listings for similar Hendrix master tapes for Midnight Lightning.
