Jimi Hendrix – Blue Cheer – Electric Flag – Original John Van Hamersveld Poster Artwork
The original artwork for a 1968 Jimi Hendrix /Blue Cheer /Electric Flag concert poster by John Van Hamersveld. Van Hamersveld created most of the highly collectible posters for the 1968 Pinnacle dance concerts held at Los Angeles’ Shrine Auditorium. Among his best-known designs was his portrait of Jimi Hendrix for the Shrine Hendrix concert with Blue Cheer, Electric Flag and Soft Machine, on December 10, 1968. This is his original artwork for an alternate, never-produced poster for that show (we speculate that the promoters rejected this in favor of a design more prominently featuring Hendrix, a major concert attraction by that time–as indeed the poster they chose did.) On this original artwork, Van Hamersveld has hand-drawn the intricate artwork in black ink on 14′ x 20′ illustration board, over his blue line/keyline artwork (a earlier stage, blue-tinted background similar to a blueprint, produced by the printer from an earlier background drawing.) Van Hamersveld’s drawing is extremely detailed and precise; it must have taken him many hours to create and illustrate this highly psychedelic work. In overall excellent condition; a truly one-of-a-kind example of psychedelic artwork from an acknowledged master.
