John Coltrane – 1962 Hamburg Concert Poster, Art by Gunter Keiser

An extraordinary concert poster advertising a November 1962 show by John Coltrane and his Group at Theaterkasse Collien in Hamburg, Germany.

Coltrane was in his prime during this period, touring with his ‘classic quartet’ members McCoy Tyner, Jimmy Garrison and Elvin Jones, and releasing a flurry of classic albums including Africa Brass (1961,) Live! at the Village Vanguard and Coltrane (1962,) and Duke Ellington & John Coltrane, Ballads, John Coltrane and Johnny Hartman, and Impressions (all 1963.)  Tracks from the show this poster advertises appear on the Coltrane album Live Trane: The European Tours.

Designed by legendary German designer Günther Kieser with Hans Michel, the poster was originally machine folded for mailing; it has been archivally linen mounted for flattening and conservation, and looks absolutely stunning.  In near mint condition.  Poster measures 33 5/8” x 23 5/8”.

German artist Günther Kieser is best known for the concert posters he designed for German promoters Lippmann & Rau.  Working initially with designer Hans Michel and then on his own, Kieser created iconic posters for jazz artists including Duke Ellington, Ella Fitzgerald, Count Basie, and Miles Davis, and rock artists including the Grateful Dead, Fleetwood Mac, The Doors, and The Who.  His most famous poster, advertising a series of 1968 German shows by The Jimi Hendrix Experience, depicted Hendrix with multi-colored neon tubes flowing from his hair.  Kieser has won numerous international awards, his work has been exhibited worldwide.
