John Coltrane – Albert Ayler – Sonny Rollins – 1966 New York Concert Handbill
An extremely rare handbill for the “TITANS OF THE TENOR” concert on Feb 19, 1966 at New York’s Philharmonic Hall. This historic show featured the extraordinary lineup of John Coltrane, Sonny Rollins, Coleman Hawkins and Zoot Sims, as well as Clark Terry and Bob Brookmeyer. Mosaic Records co-founder Michael Cuscuna wrote the following about this show after seeing this handbill featured on our blog: “I had a front row seat. Coleman Hawkins was in great form with his quartet and Zoot Sims, backed by Roger Kellaway, was absolutely incandescent that night. Half way through Sonny Rollins’s set, Yusef Lateef slipped onto the stage with tenor in hand. The closer was shocking as the audience was expecting the classic Coltrane quartet. Instead out came Alice Coltrane, Jimmy Garrison and Rashied Ali and am army of horns including Don and Albert Ayler who stood at the edge of the stage and exploded into turbulent sound. I, for one, was pinned to my chair in utter confusion.” Evidently this was the only time that Coltrane ever performed with Albert Ayler, and the set consisted of two tunes–a 35 minute version of “My Favorite Things” and “Om.” The handbill measures 5 1/2″ x 8 1/2″ and is in mint condition; it’s the only example we have ever seen, and in fact, we could find no other example online or listed in any other collection. A possibly unique opportunity to obtain an important Coltrane and Avant-Garde Jazz artifact.
