John Coltrane – Handwritten Musical Manuscript

Two musical manuscripts handwritten by Jazz icon John Coltrane. On the first, Coltrane has written untitled melodies, in pencil and black ink; the second contains an untitled practice notation of eight bars in pencil (see the third photo for a more detailed explanation.) These were originally sold as lot #283 in the legendary 2005 Guernsey’s Jazz Auction in New York; having been consigned by Coltrane’s family. The back of each sheet has the authenticating stamp of Coltrane’s music publishing company, Jowcol Music. The manuscripts, measuring 9 1/4″ x 12 1/2″ and 9 1/4″ x 6 1/2″, have been archivally (and beautifully) framed, to 14″ x 30.” Additional notations by Coltrane are written on the back of the smaller sheet, but are not visible because of the framing. These originally sold at auction for $7500, unframed. With a copy of the relevant page from the Guernsey’s catalog, and Recordmecca’s written lifetime guarantee of authenticity. From an extraordinary Jazz collection we recently purchased.
