John Lennon – Serve Yourself Acetate
An incredible John Lennon/Beatles rarity; an original 7" acetate of Lennon's unreleased (at the time) song "Serve Yourself." This song was Lennon's vitriolic answer to Bob Dylan's just released Christian song "Gotta Serve Somebody." Dylan's song was a clear indication of his embrace of Jesus, and Lennon, seemingly aghast, wrote this song as a rebuke to his one-time idol's embrace of Christianity. Google the song's title and you can read the very direct and angry lyrics. Lennon only recorded this song as a demo (in 1980, probably on a cassette) and it was unreleased until 1998's posthumous "John Lennon Anthology."(br)This original 7" acetate was cut at Atlantic Records' New York mastering studios sometime in the early 80's. The label says "mono rough" and lists the time at 4:50, though that time is actually a typo–it clocks in at 3:50. This is virtually the same version as on the "Anthology", thought there are a few seconds of extra strumming/tuning at the beginning. The fidelity isn't as clear as on the "Anthology" as it was undoubtedly remastered for release. This acetate comes directly from the collection of Beatles acetate authority Mark Erbach, who has collected Beatles and solo acetates for 25 years. Erbach is a contributor to Bruce Spizer's books "The Beatles Story on Capitol Records", "The Beatles on Apple Records" , "The Beatles Solo on Apple Records", and "The Beatles Swan Song"; as well as "Eight Arms To Hold You" by Chip Madinger & Mark Easter, and a contributor to The BeatleSource website, dedicated to all Beatles acetates. Erbach's letter of authenticity accompanies this acetate. Also included is a letter of authenticity from Perry Cox, world recognized Beatles expert and author of "Price Guide For The Beatles American Records."(br)Collectors beware–there has been a spate of fake Beatles acetates on Ebay and elsewhere of late, many from Italy. This, however, is absolutely genuine, sold with our lifetime guarantee and a letter of authenticity from one of the foremost Beatles acetate experts in the world. Rare and desirable as can be !
