Johnny Cash – His Vest, Given To Bob Neuwirth at 1964 Newport Folk Festival

A vest given by Johnny Cash to Bob Neuwirth, Bob Dylan’s close friend and sometime road manager, at the 1964 Newport Folk Festival.  We acquired this directly from singer/songwriter/painter Neuwirth, who toured with Dylan during the 1960’s and 1970’s, and put together the Rolling Thunder Review.  Neuwirth appears in the films Don’t Look Back and Renaldo and Clara, and the lower half of his body is seen standing behind Dylan on the front of the Highway 61 Revisited album cover.

At our request, Neuwirth recorded a short video detailing the history of the vest, which will be provided to the buyer.  He notes “This is the vest that Johnny Cash gave me in 1964 at the Newport Folk Festival, when he and Bob Dylan met face to face, after a year or so of correspondence about songwriting and all things cosmic.  John gave Bob the guitar that he’d been playing…and during the course of hanging out in a trailer, I admired his vest and he said ‘Here hoss, you can have this vest.'”  Neuwirth goes on to talk about the size of the vest, how he left it tied in the back as given to him by Cash, and how he “kept it all this time, traveling from home to home to home.”

The size 40 vest was made by British men’s clothier Dunn & Co., and is in overall very good condition; it measures 20″ in the armpit area, and 20 1/2″ long.  With Recordmecca’s written lifetime guarantee of authenticity.
