Keith Haring – Signed 1987 ‘A Very Special Christmas’ Screenprint

An original Keith Haring screenprint on thick art paper, signed and dated ’87’ by the artist in gold in the lower right hand corner.  The artwork was created by Haring for the charity fundraiser album A Very Special Christmas, and 100 examples were signed by him.

A Very Special Christmas was conceived of by record producer Jimmy Iovine as a memorial for his father, with proceeds benefiting the Special Olympics.  The album, released in 1987,  featured artists including Bruce Springsteen, Sting, U2, Madonna, Whitney Houston, Stevie Nicks and Run-DMC performing Christmas songs. In the years since, nine more albums have been released in the series, each using Haring’s iconic artwork, raising over $100 million for the Special Olympics.

Recordmecca owner Jeff Gold, then vice president of creative services at A&M Records, was an art director for the project.  Working with Haring’s office, he commissioned these silkscreen prints, in gold metallic and red ink, which were given to the project’s participants and used for promotional giveaways. Approximately 300 were made, with Haring signing only 100 prints.

The A Very Special Christmas album is in the collection of The Museum of Modern Art in New York City.  The most recent auction sales of the signed screenprint have been $7500 and $8750.
