A Columbia Records document signed by jazz great Miles Davis, detailing an agreement between the record company and Davis to advance legendary Jazz arranger (and celebrated Davis collaborator) Gil Evans $1,500. Columbia vice president Dick Asher wrote Davis that the label wished to honor his request to advance Evans the money (as a loan against future royalties) but that they had already advanced him $3000. two years before, which he still owed. Columbia agreed to the second advance, as long as Miles agreed that if it went unpaid, they could deduct it from his own royalties. Asher sent this Xeroxed agreement to Davis at his home on West 77th St. in New York, asking him to sign and return it if he agreed—which he did. The back of the page has a timestamp indicating it was received by Columbia's business affairs department on September 5, 1967 (at 9:30 AM !) Gil Evans and Miles Davis collaborated on some of Davis's most important albums, including Miles Ahead (1957), Porgy and Bess (1958), Sketches of Spain (1960), and Quiet Nights (1962.) Wikipedia's Gil Evans page notes 'Although these four records were marketed under Davis's name (and credited to Miles Davis and the Gil Evans Big Band) Evans's contribution was as important as Davis's. Their work coupled Evans's classic big band jazz stylings and arrangements with Davis's solo playing. Evans also contributed to Davis's classic quintet albums of the 1960's.'
