Monterey Pop Festival – 1967 Large Size Foil Concert Poster / Jimi Hendrix, The Who, Grateful Dead, Janis Joplin, Jefferson Airplane, Byrds, Etc.

A very rare original large size concert poster advertising the 1967 Monterey International Pop Festival.  Legend has it that the smaller size Monterey Pop posters were sold at the festival, and the larger size posters like this one were used exclusively to advertise this extraordinary festival.

In 2022, a mint example of this poster sold for $25,000, and a copy in VG- condition sold for $18,759.  This example is only in Good condition, with numerous issues, and has been priced accordingly.

‘Monterey Pop’ was arguably the most important music festival ever, featuring the first US appearance of Jimi Hendrix, as well as Janis Joplin with Big Brother and the Holding Company, the Grateful Dead, Buffalo Springfield, The Byrds, The Who, Jefferson Airplane, and so many more. This foil poster, designed by Tom Wilkes, is prone to wear.

This larger example measures 19″ x 35″, while the smaller version is 12 1/4″ x 21 3/8″.

There are numerous pinholes in the corners with a scattering along the bottom edge, a 1″ tear to the bottom center edge and a 1/2″ tear to the top right corner.  There is a horizontal crease 1″ from the bottom edge, another through the letters ‘ional’ in ‘International’, some gouging in ‘M’ in Monterey, and ‘e’ and ‘r’ in ‘International’, a number of minor edge creases, two drips of some kind beginning in the ‘U’ of ‘June’ and continuing down 7″ or so, and light general toning.

That said, the colors are bright and bold, and this will look much better framed and matted.

An extremely rare poster for one of the most important rock festivals ever, at a much more affordable price than is usually found.
