Nina Simone – Twice Signed Concert Contract & Program
A concert contract signed twice by the legendary Nina Simone for a series of shows at New York's renowned club, The Village Gate, in March and April, 1961. Simone and her trio were contracted here for a series of four consecutive weeks, for $1500 per week, plus 10% "commission." We can only imagine how great it must have been to see Simone, at the peak of her powers, in such an intimate setting. Simone prints her name, signs it as well, and writes her home address, on Central Park West. The contract is also signed by Village Gate owner Art D'Lugoff. Also included is a small program for Simone's concert at Hunter College in New York City, October 21, 1960 which features an essay on Simone by Langston Hughes, and ads for shows by other artists including Ray Charles, Cannonball Adderley, Max Roach, and Gerry Mulligan. The contract and program would look great in a frame together.
