Otis Redding, The Mar-Keys & The MG’s – Signed Music Publishing Contract

A truly unique Otis Redding/Stax Records collectible; an original signed music publishing contract for Otis Redding’s song “Boston Monkey” (released on the posthumous album “Remember Me”) autographed by Otis Redding, his 7 fellow songwriters, and Stax founder Jim Stewart–a who’s who of the 60’s Memphis music scene. Signing here alongside Otis are Steve Cropper, Donald “Duck” Dunn, and Al Jackson, Jr. (all of Booker T & The MG’s), Wayne Jackson and Andrew Love (of the Memphis Horns), Isaac Hayes, Stax Sax player Floyd Newman, and Stax Founder Jim Stewart (signing on behalf of East Publications, Inc–Stax’s publishing arm.)(br)As all the signers (except Redding) were members of The Mar-Keys, and appeared on their 1966 debut album “The Great Memphis Sound.” This song was written during the same year, perhaps during the sessions for that album.(br)With this contract, the writers sell the publishing rights to the song to East Publications, Inc. (one of Stax’s publishing companies.) Redding and the Mar-Keys agree to be paid 5 cents per copy sold (the standard rate at the time) and 50% of revenue for sheet music, licenses and performance income. Dated January 21, 1966, it is signed in black and blue ink. The contract is signed on behalf of East Publications by Jim Stewart, the legendary founder of Stax Records (Stewart at the time he founded Stax was a bank teller; his sister and future partner, Estelle Axton mortgaged her house to buy Stax a tape recorder.)(br)Authentic Otis Redding signatures are rare indeed, but this original contract, signed by Redding (who died in 1967,) Al Jackson, Jr. (who died in 1975,) and the rest of this extremely historic lineup is as good as it gets. Recently we sold a similar Redding-signed contract to the Smithsonian Institution–so we can truly say this is Museum Quality. As with everything we offer, this is guaranteed authentic with no time limit, in writing.
