Phil Collins – Handwritten Lyrics For “That’s Just The Way It Is” Reproduced on the ‘But Seriously’ Album Cover (Genesis)
Phil Collins’ original handwritten lyrics to his hit single “That’s Just The Way It Is, written here by Collins for use on the album cover for his massive hit But Seriously. These exact lyrics (written on two pages) are reproduced on the inner sleeve to the worldwide #1 album, illustrated here. The lyrics begin: “All day long he was fighting for you / and he didn’t even know your name / young men come and young men go / but life goes on just the same.” He pens the chorus three times: “That’s just the way it is, there’s nothing I can do, / that’s just the way it is.” Includes an original glossy 10 x 12 close-up original photo of Collins from the album cover sessions, and use for the “Just Another Day in Paradise” cover.
Collins wrote out the lyrics to each of the But Seriously songs for use on the album’s innersleeve, also handwriting the liner notes and even his name and the album title, all in a 9 1/4” x 11 1/2” notepad; these are the two pages reproduced on the album art.
Dealing with the Troubles in Northern Ireland, Collins makes reference to the gridlock of Ulster’s sectarian differences most notably in the line: “If we agree that we can disagree / we could stop all of this today.” The anti-war ballad was positively received critically and commercially around the globe, charting at #26 on the UK Singles Charts.
