Sex Pistols – 1977 Full Band Signed Contract Between Virgin & Warner Bros. Records

An original 1977 contract between Virgin Records UK and Warner Bros. Records US regarding distribution rights for the Sex Pistols records, hand signed by the Sex Pistols–Johnny Rotten, Sid Vicious, Steve Jones and Paul Cook.

As typical in the music business, multiple copies of a contracts would be signed, so each party would have a signed original for their files.  In this case, the first two pages of the contract, spelling out the terms, and signed by representatives of Virgin and Warner Bros, are file copies with reproduced signatures (indicating this was probably the copy retained by the band or its representatives).

But the all important third page, headed “Accepted and Agreed” features the original signatures of Sid Vicious (signing his legal name, John Beverley), Johnny Rotten (signing his legal name, John Lydon), Paul Cook and Steve Jones (signing Stephen Jones), as well as the Sex Pistols/Glitterbest Management lawyer, Steven Fisher.

The contract, dated October 7, 1977 (three weeks before the UK release of Never Mind the Bollocks) deals with Sex Pistols management Glitterbest entering into an agreement with Warner Bros. Records for the US and Canadian rights to release the Sex Pistols recordings, and Warner Brothers’ agreeing to pay Virgin a 3% royalty for each record sold.  Warners also agrees to include a Virgin logo and credit on each Sex Pistols record released in those territories, and endeavor to have that credit also reproduced in any chart where the Sex Pistols records might  appear.  Three pages, each 8 1/2″ x 13″, excellent condition.

An extraordinary document memorializing an important agreement, hand signed by each of the Sex Pistols just prior to the release of their debut album.  With Recordmecca’s written lifetime guarantee of authenticity.
