Stanley Mouse – 1967 Signed Drawing On “Human Be-In / Gathering Of The Tribes” Poster, Signed by Allen Ginsberg
An original drawing by the legendary Stanley Mouse, on the back of a first printing poster for A Gathering of The Tribes for a Human Be-In. Mouse has drawn a large and very ornate, almost unreadable FUCK YOU, and below, very clearly, Souvenier of Haight Ashbury (misspelled,) signing it in pencil Mouse (c) 1967 with his trademark mouse head. The Gathering of the Tribes, held in San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park on January 14, 1967 was a prelude to the Summer of Love, and featured speakers including Timothy Leary and Jerry Rubin, poets including Allen Ginsberg and Lawrence Ferlinghetti, and bands including the Grateful Dead, Quicksilver Messenger Service and Big Brother & The Holding Company. A huge crowd of up to 30,000 came, media coverage exploded, and the youth movement took off, with San Francisco at its epicenter. By the end of the summer, San Francisco had seen a huge influx up to 100,000 young people to the Haight Ashbury, who found a lack of jobs, food, drug problems and crime. By October the dream had faded, and many left to resume their studies. The front of this highly collectible poster, with art by Mouse, Alton Kelley, Michael Bowen and Casey Sonnebend, has been signed very ornately by Mouse, with his running mouse logo. Stanley Mouse via email confirmed that this artwork and the signatures date from 1967. Additionally this poster has been signed and inscribed on the front by Human Be-In participant Allen Ginsberg, who dated his signature ’96. The original owner purchased this decades ago at The Mouse House in Detroit; a shop owned by Stanley Mouse’s mother. The poster, measuring 14 1/3″ x 20″, is in excellent condition, with some light creasing from handling, but no serious issues at all. A rare opportunity to obtain a signed 1967 piece of Mouse artwork, on the back of one of his most historic and collectible posters.
