Steve Winwood – Signed Alternate “Arc of a Diver” Album Cover Artwork

A very rare promotional print made to commemorate the 1980 release of Steve Winwood’s breakthrough solo album, Arc of a Diver; signed by both Winwood and artist Tony Wright.

We acquired this from a former senior executive at Warner Brothers Records, who worked closely with Winwood (Warner distributed Winwood’s label, Island Records.) The first three photos here are of the artwork we have for sale, and the fourth photo is the released album cover, shown for reference only (and not included.) A close comparison shows that the entire image is different from the released artwork–the figure, the seaweed at the bottom right, and the moon are all unlike those on the finished album. There is no album title or artist name. And obviously the color scheme is completely different.

This appears to be a silkscreened print; the image measures 11″ square and it has been mounted to 13″ x 11 1/2″ cardboard. And best of all, it is signed along the bottom in pencil by Steve Winwood and cover artist Tony Wright (famed for his album covers for Traffic, Bob Marley, Third World, Bob Dylan, Marianne Faithful, Chic, the Ramones, Melissa Ethridge, and many others.)

While Tony Wright later issued a print of the released album cover, this is different to that in many ways, and of course is signed by the legendary Steve Winwood.
