The Doors – Jim Morrison Signed ‘Waiting For The Sun’ LP / Signed for Noted UK Music Journalist Roy Carr
A copy of The Doors third album, Waiting for the Sun, boldly signed by Jim Morrison on an adhesive label applied to the inner gatefold. Morrison signed the album for noted English music Journalist Roy Carr (1945-2018).
Roy Carr wrote for and edited New Musical Express, Melody Maker, and Vox. He was the author or co-author of ten books, including biographies of The Beatles, Rolling Stones, David Bowie, Elvis Presley, and Fleetwood Mac. Carr was also a major collector of records, music memorabilia and autographs, often bringing items to be signed when interviewing artists.
As detailed in his writings, Carr met Jim Morrison at least three times; in September 1969 at the Toronto Rock ‘n’ Roll Revival concert (where he also photographed Morrison,) later that summer at Elektra’s New York offices, and in August 1970, at the Isle of Wight Festival.
It’s not known why Carr chose to have the album signed in this way; perhaps the first two Doors albums, with dark covers and no obvious places to sign, led him to bring along Waiting for the Sun, adding the label as a clean place for Morrison to sign. Ever the collector, Carr also affixed a label to the back cover with the typed notation ‘U.S. Import.’
Jim Morrison signed albums are extremely rare. In 2012 RR Auctions sold a copy of Morrison Hotel, which they described as ‘The only Morrison-signed album known to exist’ for $17,727. In 2022, a band signed copy of Waiting for the Sun surfaced (with Morrison signing only ‘Jim’), which sold for $25,000.
The signature has been authenticated by music autograph expert Roger Epperson, who’s Certificate of Authenticity is included. Also included is Recordmecca’s written lifetime guarantee of authenticity, a letter from the person who acquired this from Carr’s estate, and copies of an article by Carr about the Toronto festival, and a tribute titled ‘Strange Days: Roy Carr Remembers Jim Morrison.’
The first pressing cover and disc are in excellent condition. Morrison’s signature, in black ballpoint pen, measures 3 ¾” long, on the 4 ½” x 3” label—by far the largest Morrison signature we’ve seen.
A truly rare Jim Morrison signed item, with exceptional provenance.
