The Who, Cream – 1967 Concert Program For 1st U.S. Shows /Murray The K Show, also featuring Smokey Robinson & The Miracles, Simon & Garfunkel, Young Rascals, Wilson Pickett, Phil Ochs, Etc.
A scarce program for Murray The K’s Music in the Fifth Dimension, a 9 day series of shows in March 1967 which were the first ever US shows played by both The Who and Cream.
Murray the K was a New York disc jockey who nicknamed himself ‘The Fifth Beatle’, and often promoted ‘package show’ concerts; in this case at New York’s 58th Street Theater. For this series of shows, 14 acts each played two or three songs, with two or three performances a day, from March 25 -April 2, 1967.
The lineup is almost impossible to believe – joining The Who and Cream were Smokey Robinson and the Miracles, Wilson Pickett, Mitch Ryder, The Blues Project, Simon and Garfunkel, The Young Rascals, Phil Ochs, The Blues Magoos, Jim & Jean, Mandala and the now forgotten groups The Chicago Loop and comedy act The Hardly Worthit Players.
Each band is pictured, but the only biography is for Murray The K. There are great period advertisements, including one featuring albums by Cream, Pickett and the Young Rascals, and another for Beatles tour programs.
The 20 page program measures 8 7/8″ x 11 7/8″, and is in very good plus condition, with a bit of wear to the outer cover, a small stain on the back; the inside pages are all in excellent condition. The only example we’ve had of this rare program.
