Thelonious Monk – 1954 New York Handbill

A handbill for Bop legend Thelonious Monk and his All-Stars at New York’s Open Door Club, in August, 1954. While we don’t know who backed Monk on this date, he played on Miles Davis’ “Bags Groove” and “Miles Davis and the Modern Jazz Giants” in ’54, and recorded his own sessions backed by Sonny Rollins, Art Taylor, Art Blakey, Percy Heath, Curley Russell and Frank Foster. This handbill is in mint condition other than a neatly written “1954” in pencil in the lower right corner, and measures 6″ x 9″. From an extraordinary Jazz collection we recently purchased.
