Thelonious Monk – Owned and Stage Worn Jacket
Thelonious Monk's custom made gold brocade smoking jacket with velvet lapels and trim. This jacket was sold by Monk's family at the famous Guernsey's Jazz Auction in 2005. According to the catalog this jacket "was considered by his family to be amongst his most favorite attire (a notion supported by period photographs.) Monk was seen both on stage and at moments of relaxation in this custom made jacket." Monk's son T.S. Monk, who spoke before the auction, told me this was one of his father's favorite possessions, and that he wore it at home, on stage, and while composing at the piano. Included with the jacket is an original Jim Marshall photograph of the Monk family in their apartment at 234 W. 63rd Street in New York, where Monk can be seen wearing the jacket (shot for the Saturday Evening Post, for an article dated April 11, 1964.) Also included is a copy of the Guernsey's catalog. A unique collectible from a true genius of modern jazz, with perfect provenance. (The copyright to the photograph included is owned by Jim Marshall; only the print is included.)
