An oversize vintage photograph of Tom Waits in Amsterdam, by Dutch photographer Claude Vanheye/Clouds Studios.
This print was one of a group submitted to Bizarre Straight Records, who chose similar images by Vanheye for the covers and CD booklets for Tom Waits’ The Early Years and The Early Years Vol. 2, and is very similar to the image chosen for The Early Years cover.
In 2012, the Amsterdam Museum presented the exhibition Claude Vanheye – Famous Popstars in Amsterdam, featuring his images of Tom Waits, Jimi Hendrix, Frank Zappa, Blondie, Kate Bush, Grace Jones, and Michael Jackson – which the museum noted ‘is just a small selection of the international stars who posed for [Vanheye’s] camera…over the past forty years. The exhibition is in honour of Vanheye’s fortieth year as a professional photographer and the publication of the photography book Claude Vanheye – Famous Popstars in Amsterdam.
