Trips Festival – Stewart Brand Memo to Ralph J. Gleason
A typewritten and signed memo from Trips Festival (and Whole Earth Catalog founder) Stewart Brand to San Francisco Chronicle music critic Ralph J. Gleason, giving the history of the legendary Trips Festival. In this memo, dated January 29, 1969 Brand writes to Gleason "This is written out of regard for your role as contemporary historian of the San Francisco rock epoch…" Brand is concerned that the true story of who did what at the "Trips Festival" will be lost, so he wrote it all down here, for Gleason. Legendary critic Gleason, who was at the center of the San Francisco scene, wrote the first history of it in his book, "The Jefferson Airplane and the San Francisco Scene." Brand details over 4 pages exactly who did what in organizing and carrying off the Trips Festival. This is largely unknown information, directly from the source. We have blurred out some of the names from the scans here, to preserve the unique nature of this for the buyer. This document came directly from the archive of Ralph J. Gleason. A truly unique and historically important document from the golden age of the San Francisco sound.
