Velvet Underground – 1968 Silver Foil Hippodrome Concert Poster / From Sterling Morrison Collection, Exhibited at Andy Warhol Museum
An extremely rare metallic ink concert poster advertising the Velvet Underground and Quicksilver Messenger Service at San Diego’s short-lived Hippodrome club, on July 5 & 6, 1968. This is one of the rarest Velvet Underground concert posters.
This poster was part of Velvet’s guitarist Sterling Morrison’s legendary archive of Velvet Underground memorabilia, and was shown at The Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh, as part of the 1996 exhibition All Tomorrow’s Parties: Remembering the Velvet Underground.
At this point, the band were touring in support of their second album, White Light/White Heat, released five months earlier. And Quicksilver had issued their self-titled debut only two months earlier–and as the tracks from their live album Happy Trails attest, they were on fire in 1968. The Hippodrome appears to have only existed for three months, during the summer of 1968.
The poster is archivally mounted in the Warhol Museum’s fold-open museum mat, from which it can easily be removed, but as the mount is museum quality and ready to frame, we have left it intact. The Museum’s pencil notation is inside the mount.
Included is an index card from Sterling Morrison’s archive file, with his handwritten details about the poster and it’s 1980’s insurance value. Morrison stamped many of his posters with his archive stamp, and this poster likely has that stamp on the back. Also included is a copy of documentation from the Warhol Museum, noting this poster was part of the exhibition.
This was acquired directly from Morrison’s widow Martha. Her letter of authenticity is included as is Recordmecca’s written lifetime guarantee of authenticity.
An exceedingly rare Velvet Underground poster with impeccable provenance.
In excellent condition, with minor creasing, particular to the corners. Poster:17 ½” x 22 ½”. Mount 22” x 28”
