Velvet Underground & Andy Warhol – 1967 ‘Blockprint’ Magazine From Rhode Island School of Design, With VU Content

An exceedingly rare issue of Blockprint, the Rhode Island School of Design student-edited magazine, dated April 10, 1967.  This issue chronicles the March 31-April 1 Exploding Plastic Inevitable performance at RISD and includes photographs of the Velvet Underground and Andy Warhol.

This copy came from the archives of former RISD student and Blockprint editor-in-chief Ronn Spencer, who had seen the Velvets at the Dom in New York, and booked the EPI to appear at the school (he believes the total fee was $2500.)  The issue includes 15 photographs of The Velvets and Warhol, a short interview with Warhol conducted by Spencer during the EPI show (with mentions of the Velvets, Warhol’s club The Gymnasium, his films, Chelsea Girls, etc.),  a short impressionistic review of the Velvets/EPI show, a letter to the editor criticizing the show (“I and most of the people I’ve talked to about the show thought the ‘inevitable’ itself was rather anti-climactic”).  At our request, Spencer has signed this on the inside front cover. This is his last extra copy.  11″ x 8″, in near mint condition.  One of a very few surviving examples.
